Are Military and Civilian Retirements That Different?
Retiring in general can throw you for a loop. You might find that you’re not sure what to do with yourself or where to go. Military and Civilian retirement shares those similarities as well as some differences.
Being in the military is one of the most selfless and wonderful things in the world. Military retirement is very special with extended benefits to enjoy.
The great thing about retiring in the military is that you get your benefits no matter how old you are. This is in stark contrast to civilian retirement where you only get your retirement package based on age and length of time you put into it.
Even though there are great benefits to retiring in the military, it can also be a huge adjustment. Military life is usually very structured. Civilian life and throw you for a loop if you’re not prepared, whereas civilians do not have to make that adjustment. It’s a total transition from the fast-past world of the military to living a life of calmed down leisure.
There is another social change that has to be made as well. Having been in the military, you might be familiar with having to move around from base to base. The difference between that and retirement is that you might lose touch with those who are staying in the service longer or moving to a different area upon their own retirement.
Civilian retirement is different in that people tend to stay close to home. Even though there is no longer a work life civilians tend to keep the same home life.
Even so, being in the military is a great honor and there is no reason to lament the fact that your life is changing. In fact, you can take this opportunity to accomplish the goals you’ve had all your life. Have you wanted to take a journey around the world? Now you can! Have you just wanted to retire secretly to be near your children or grandchildren? Do it!
If you don’t take the time to figure out where your passions lie, you run the risk of becoming very bored. You might fill your time with needless activities that don’t mean much to you, and that is no way to live.
Even if you choose to stick around the area where you live there are great veterans clubs that you can be a part of. These are different from civilian retirement clubs that anyone can throw together as they are extremely well planned. Besides, you’re likely to find a lot of your buddies there as well.
Whether you’re retiring in the military or retiring as a civilian there are going to be some life changes. Chances are that you’ll be retiring with others who share similar interests and activities. The important thing is that you figure out what you love to do and have a fulfilling time for the rest of your life.
